چکیده

Wind power is currently the fastest growing renewable energy application in the United States. Many regions, however, such as the state of Florida, do not have high enough average wind speeds for wind power to be economically feasible. Nevertheless, Florida's extensive coastline may present the opportunity for implementing offshore wind technology. Offshore winds are typically stronger due to the lack of obstructions over open water, thus qualifying sections of the coastline as potentially desirable wind farm locations. An emergy synthesis was conducted to compare a theoretical offshore wind farm for Jacksonville, Florida to the following fossil fuel units currently operating at Jacksonville Electric Authority: a purely coal-fired steam turbine based on Plant Scherer; a steam turbine fueled by a mix of coal and petroleum coke based on St. Johns River Power Park; and a natural gas combined-cycle unit based on Brandy Branch. The emergy analysis determined that the wind farm had an emergy yield ratio of 2.0, compared to 19 for the coal system, 14.5 for the coal-mix system, and 11.3 for the natural gas system. The wind farm’s environmental loading ratio was found to be five orders of magnitude lower than the conventional systems, with a value of 0.96. Similarly, the emergy index of sustainability for the wind farm was found to have an advantageously higher value of 2, while the fossil fired systems were found to be on the order of 10 to 10.

A New Control Method for Smoothing PMSG-based Offshore Wind Farm Output Power

Nowadays, propagation of wind turbines make challenges to supply safe power to the grid. Because of wind speed changes, supervisors are concerned to wind turbines, be able to produce appropriate electric power during the wind speed changes. As a matter of fact, investors are mostly like to invest on offshore wind farms, because of their more stable and continuous wind speed rather than onshore ...

Negative long term effects on harbour porpoises from a large scale offshore wind farm in the Baltic---evidence of slow recovery

Offshore wind farms constitute a new and fast growing industry all over the world. This study investigates the long term impact on harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena, for more than 10 years (2001–12) from the first large scale offshore wind farm in the world, Nysted Offshore Wind Farm, in the Danish western Baltic Sea (72× 2.3 MW turbines). The wind farm was brought into full operation in Dec...

Cost-Benefit Investigation of Offshore Wind Power Generation for Soroush Offshore Complex

Iranian offshore oil and gas platforms are mostly located in the Persian Gulf. Technical and environmental challenges resulted from an off-design running condition of processes on a platform are important issues. The weakness of strategies to stop or decrease the amount of greenhouse gas emission production rate in the Persian Gulf; which is intensively increasing, is another matter of concern....

Responses of two marine top predators to an offshore wind farm

Quantifying the likely effects of offshore wind farms on wildlife is fundamental before permission for development can be granted by any Determining Authority. The effects on marine top predators from displacement from important habitat are key concerns during offshore wind farm construction and operation. In this respect, we present evidence for no significant displacement from a UK offshore w...

Evaluation of complex system structures in maintenance processes at offshore wind farms

The evaluation of complex system structures has to address the question “Can the model give a true and correct view of the real situation?” The model has to be investigated with regard to functionality, completeness, correctness, reliability and usability. The offshore wind farm in maintenance status is an example for complex system structures. Furthermore the offshore wind farm is not organise...
